The Ministry of Health (MOH) has intensified nationwide surveillance and emergency preparedness measures following reported Ebola outbreaks in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In a statement issued to the media, the Ministry assured the public that Ghana remains on high alert and is working closely with international health partners to strengthen response systems against any possible spread of the disease into the country.
According to the statement, updates from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) confirmed suspected and confirmed Ebola cases in the affected countries.
The Ministry said precautionary measures already activated include enhanced screening and surveillance at airports, seaports, and land borders, particularly for travellers arriving from high-risk areas.
Health workers across the country are also undergoing training to improve the identification, isolation, and management of suspected Ebola cases, while emergency coordination and rapid response systems have been reinforced.
Authorities further disclosed that public education and community awareness campaigns have been intensified to provide citizens with accurate information on symptoms, transmission, and prevention of the disease.
The Ministry explained that Ebola Virus Disease is a highly dangerous viral infection spread through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected persons or contaminated surfaces and materials.
Symptoms include fever, weakness, headaches, vomiting, diarrhoea, and, in severe cases, bleeding.
The public has been advised to practise regular handwashing, use alcohol-based sanitisers, avoid contact with bodily fluids of sick persons, and refrain from handling dead bodies or sick wild animals without proper protection.
The statement also encouraged proper handling and thorough cooking of meat products and urged anyone experiencing suspected symptoms to report immediately to the nearest health facility.
The Ministry cautioned against misinformation and urged citizens to rely only on official communication from the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service for updates on the situation.
Officials reaffirmed government’s commitment to protecting public health, stating that authorities would continue monitoring developments closely while maintaining readiness to respond swiftly if necessary.
