The government of Ghana has set aside GH¢20 million for the new Film Development Fund, a move aimed at revitalising the country’s cinematic sector and enhancing its economic and creative contributions.
James Gardiner, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the National Film Authority, revealed that the fund is expected to become operational in the second quarter of 2026. He described it as a strategic initiative designed to stimulate growth across the entire film value chain, with particular emphasis on supporting production.
Speaking at the Filmmakers Summit during the Ashanti Festival ’26 in Kumasi on March 17, Gardiner explained that the fund would also prioritise capacity building, expand distribution networks, and improve access to both local and international markets.
The initiative reflects government efforts to reposition Ghana’s film industry as a competitive and sustainable sector capable of creating jobs, promoting cultural content, and generating revenue for the economy.
