Ghana’s High Commission in South Africa has temporarily suspended new registrations for its ongoing voluntary evacuation programme to allow authorities to process and verify a surge of applications already received.
In a statement issued on June 1, the mission said the suspension will take effect from Tuesday, June 2, 2026, and is necessary to enable both the High Commission and South Africa’s Home Affairs authorities to properly screen submitted applications.
According to the mission, more than 1,500 Ghanaians living in South Africa have already registered for the repatriation exercise, prompting the need for careful verification and processing before the next phase begins.
Officials explained that the decision does not mark the end of the evacuation initiative. Instead, it is a temporary measure to ensure that all applications received so far are properly handled in an orderly and transparent manner.
The High Commission assured applicants that a new registration window will be opened after the current batch has been processed, adding that the date for the next phase will be communicated in due course.
It further appealed for patience and cooperation from the Ghanaian community in South Africa, noting that their support remains crucial to the success of the programme.
The voluntary evacuation exercise is part of ongoing efforts by Ghanaian authorities to assist citizens abroad who wish to return home, while ensuring proper coordination and documentation of all applicants.
