Ghana is set to launch its national Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy in April 2026, aiming to modernise public service delivery and strengthen governance through digital innovation. The announcement was made by Mr Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, during a validation workshop in Accra on Ghana’s AI Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM).
Held in collaboration with UNESCO, the workshop brought together policymakers, academics, and technology experts to assess Ghana’s preparedness to integrate AI into governance and socio-economic development. Participants stressed the importance of collaboration between government, academia, and the private sector to ensure AI solutions are contextually relevant.
Mr George highlighted that the AI strategy would support sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and finance, enabling farmers to improve productivity, assisting medical professionals in diagnosis, and increasing financial inclusion. He emphasised that AI would also help reduce inefficiencies, curb corruption, and enhance access to public services.
The Minister assured that Ghana was committed to building the necessary infrastructure and regulatory frameworks to promote ethical, inclusive, and human-centred AI adoption. “Our vision is to make AI a tool for social inclusion and national progress,” he said.
Dr Ama Serwaa, Secretary-General of the Ghana Commission for UNESCO, praised Ghana for proactively assessing AI readiness and urged authorities to ensure responsible deployment with safeguards for privacy, human rights, and cultural diversity. She also called for public awareness campaigns to build trust and demystify AI.
Dr Arnold Kavaarpuo, Executive Director of the Data Protection Commission, underscored the need for strong governance to protect personal data, stressing that AI must empower citizens without compromising their rights.
The national AI strategy positions Ghana as a potential leader in responsible digital transformation in Africa, providing a roadmap for inclusive and innovative public service delivery.
