Pep Guardiola has stressed that Manchester City F.C. must avoid dropping points in their upcoming league match against West Ham United F.C. if they are to keep their Premier League title hopes alive.
City currently sit seven points behind leaders Arsenal F.C., although Guardiola’s side still have a game in hand. With only a handful of matches left in the season, the City manager believes any further slip could effectively end their chances of catching the league leaders.
According to Guardiola, every remaining match now carries huge importance as teams across the table are battling for different objectives — from the title race to European qualification and relegation survival.
West Ham, who host the champions at the London Stadium, are fighting to move out of the relegation zone and will be equally determined to secure points. The Hammers have shown improved form recently, losing just once in their last five league matches.
Despite the challenge, Guardiola insists his side are just as motivated as their opponents, stressing that there are no second chances at this stage of the campaign.
The City manager also attempted to shift attention away from his side’s recent 3–0 Champions League defeat to Real Madrid C.F. at the Santiago Bernabéu. City will host the Spanish giants in the return leg next week.
Guardiola defended his tactical approach in the first leg after criticism of his attack-minded team selection, saying such judgments often depend solely on the result.
The Spaniard noted that managers are frequently praised as “genius” when tactics work but face heavy criticism when results go the other way, adding that such scrutiny is part of coaching at the highest level.
For now, Guardiola’s focus remains firmly on the Premier League clash with West Ham — a result he believes could determine whether City remain serious contenders in the title race.
