Illegal Mining Under Fire as NAIMOS Advances Along Birim River

Ghana’s renewed battle against illegal mining has moved into a critical phase in the Eastern Region, with the National Anti Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) launching a major operation to clear illegal mining activities along the Birim River and its immediate catchment areas.

The operation, which commenced in the Kyebi area on August 1, 2026, forms part of a broader national campaign to protect Ghana’s strategic water bodies from activities that have left several rivers severely degraded and polluted. At the centre of the intervention is the Birim River, a vital water source whose deteriorating condition has raised concerns about the sustainability of water production for communities in the area.

For NAIMOS, the mission goes beyond disrupting illegal mining. It is also aimed at creating the environmental conditions required for the gradual recovery of the river and supporting efforts to restore the operations of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), whose ability to extract and treat water has been undermined by the deteriorating quality of the Birim.

Since the operation began, NAIMOS personnel have moved into identified illegal mining locations along sections of the river, clearing several initial sites and disrupting mining activities. Taskforce teams are continuing to advance into other areas identified as being affected by illegal mining, with particular attention being given to activities operating directly within or dangerously close to the river corridor.

The Birim River has become emblematic of the environmental cost of unregulated mining, where the immediate pursuit of mineral wealth can collide with the long term needs of communities for clean and dependable water. The destruction of riverbanks, disturbance of surrounding ecosystems and pollution associated with mining have intensified pressure on an already vulnerable water system.

“The battle for the Birim is ultimately a battle to protect water, livelihoods and the future of communities that depend on the river.”

NAIMOS officials say the operation will not end with the removal of illegal mining activities from the identified sites. Cleared locations are expected to remain under surveillance to prevent illegal miners from returning and re establishing operations once enforcement teams leave the area.

That surveillance component is considered crucial to the long term success of the intervention. Previous efforts to clear illegal mining sites have demonstrated that without sustained monitoring and community cooperation, abandoned locations can quickly become active again, undermining environmental restoration efforts and prolonging the pressure on Ghana’s already fragile water resources.

The Kyebi operation also reflects a growing recognition that the fight against illegal mining cannot be separated from the country’s water security agenda. Rivers affected by mining are not merely environmental assets; they are essential infrastructure supporting households, agriculture, industry and public water systems.

“Protecting Ghana’s rivers means protecting the country’s water security.”

NAIMOS has therefore called on communities along the Birim River to support the operation and urged individuals engaged in illegal mining within the river corridor to abandon their activities. Community participation is expected to play an important role in identifying illegal operations, protecting cleared areas and ensuring that enforcement gains translate into lasting environmental recovery.

The Secretariat is also expected to continue working with security agencies, regulatory institutions, traditional authorities, the Ghana Water Company Limited and affected communities as the operation progresses. Such collaboration will be critical if enforcement is to be matched by effective restoration and sustainable management of the river’s catchment.

For communities that have watched the condition of the Birim deteriorate, the operation represents a test of whether Ghana can convert its increasingly forceful rhetoric against illegal mining into measurable environmental recovery. The immediate challenge is to stop further damage; the larger challenge is to rebuild a river system capable of serving communities reliably for generations.

The success of the intervention will ultimately be measured not only by the number of illegal mining sites cleared, but by whether the Birim begins to recover, whether illegal miners are prevented from returning and whether water treatment operations can gradually regain the reliability required to serve affected communities.

As the NAIMOS operation continues across the Kyebi area, the Birim River has become the latest frontline in Ghana’s struggle to balance mineral exploitation with environmental responsibility. The message from the intervention is clear: the country’s rivers cannot remain collateral damage in the pursuit of gold, and the protection of critical water sources must remain central to the national response to illegal mining.
