New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Nyarko Osei, has questioned the authority of former acting national chairman Smith Danquah Buttey to halt consideration of proposed constitutional amendments at the party’s national conference.
Osei maintained that the national conference remained the party’s highest decision-making body and that its decisions could not be overridden by the national chairman or flagbearer.
In a Facebook post, the lawmaker argued that Buttey should have presented a motion for delegates to decide on the proposed amendments if he had concerns about them.
He noted that the amendments had already received approval from the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council, both of which were chaired by Buttey.
The disagreement emerged at the NPP’s national delegates conference held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on October 3, where constitutional reforms became a contentious issue.
Despite the dispute, the conference adopted 14 constitutional amendments aimed at revising the party’s internal governance arrangements.
