The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has issued a firm warning to commercial drivers flouting the newly mandated 15% reduction in transport fares, vowing strict enforcement to protect commuters from fare exploitation.
In a statement issued by its Public Affairs Directorate, the KMA revealed that it had observed growing non-compliance among some transport operators despite the recent fare cuts agreed upon by transport unions.
The Assembly described the refusal to implement the revised fares as a criminal offence, emphasizing that offenders will face prosecution under applicable laws.
“To restore order and fairness in the transport system, commercial drivers who refuse to charge the approved reduced fare are committing a punishable offence,” the KMA said.
Following a high-level meeting with the Regional Head of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), the KMA disclosed that enforcement teams will soon be deployed to major roads across Kumasi to monitor and ensure compliance.
The Assembly is calling on the general public to cooperate with deployed officers as they carry out their mandate.
“Our goal is not to punish, but to uphold sanity on the roads and ensure commuters benefit from the fare adjustments as intended,” the statement noted.
The KMA reiterated its commitment to promoting accountability within the city’s transport sector, urging drivers to honour the fare structure and reminding passengers of their right to report non-compliant drivers.
