KOICA Scholarships Advance Ghana’s Quest for Skilled Professionals in Key Sectors

Fifteen Ghanaian professionals have been awarded prestigious full scholarships to pursue master’s degrees in South Korea under the 2025 KOICA Scholarship Programme, in what government and development partners describe as a strategic boost to Ghana’s human capital agenda.

The awardees, drawn from both the public and private sectors, are set to study critical fields such as energy policy, agricultural engineering, ICT convergence, gender equality, trade and industrial policy, and global health security—areas that align with Ghana’s national development priorities.

At a pre-departure orientation held in Accra, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) said the programme is not merely academic, but a deliberate investment in Ghana’s future workforce.

Mr. Donghyun Lee, KOICA Country Director, underscored the importance of translating acquired knowledge into national development outcomes.

“Ghana needs your expertise, your energy, and your leadership now more than ever,” he said. “Return with solutions, not just degrees.”

The scholars will be hosted by top Korean universities such as Seoul National University, KDI School of Public Policy, and Yonsei University—institutions globally recognised for their innovation and research output.

The scholarships form part of KOICA’s Capacity Improvement & Advancement for Tomorrow (CIAT) initiative, a flagship South Korean programme that equips professionals from developing countries with technical and leadership skills based on Korea’s own development experience.

Ms. Lovia Afoakwa, President of the KOICA Alumni Association of Ghana (KAAG), highlighted the broader significance of the initiative.

“This is not just about your academic journey—it’s about preparing to make impact,” she told the cohort, urging them to uphold Ghana’s reputation and strive for excellence.

Alumni of the CIAT programme—such as Dr. Jeffrey Ofori, a senior medical officer at Tema General Hospital—shared first-hand experiences of growth, cultural learning, and innovation while studying in Korea.

Ghana remains one of KOICA’s priority partners in West Africa. The Alumni Association, which now boasts about 1,500 members, has produced professionals currently serving in key government and development roles.

The current cohort’s departure marks another milestone in strengthening South Korea–Ghana ties, and more importantly, positioning young professionals to drive policy, technology, and development in Ghana’s public service and private sectors upon their return.
