A newly introduced passenger train operating on the Tema Harbour–Afienya route sustained damage after colliding with a goat on the railway line on Thursday evening.
The Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) 002 train, which was carrying approximately 150 passengers, was travelling from Tema Harbour to Afienya when the incident occurred between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
According to reports, the goat suddenly wandered onto the railway tracks, leaving the train operator with little or no opportunity to stop or avoid the collision.
The impact damaged the lower front section of the train. However, the train remained on the tracks and did not derail.
No injuries or fatalities were recorded among the approximately 150 passengers or the train crew.
The incident temporarily disrupted operations on the line, while railway officials assessed the extent of the damage to the train.
The collision has renewed concerns about animals straying onto railway tracks and the potential safety risks they pose to rail transport.
It also highlights the need for enhanced measures to prevent unauthorised access to railway corridors as passenger rail services continue to expand.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident or indicate whether any additional safety measures will be introduced following the collision.
