Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have approved a constitutional amendment that will make the party’s elected presidential candidate the leader of the party.
The amendment was approved through an oral vote at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference held in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
The proposal, contained in Motion Number 10, seeks to amend Articles 10, 4, 1 and 13 of the party’s constitution to clarify the leadership structure of the NPP.
Under the approved amendment, where the party has an elected presidential candidate, that candidate shall assume the position of leader of the party.
The delegates also approved a related provision addressing party leadership when the NPP is in government.
The provision states that the President shall serve as leader of the party when the NPP is in government until a new presidential candidate is elected.
The constitutional changes are intended to establish a clear leadership arrangement for the party depending on whether it is in government or has an elected presidential candidate.
The approval of the amendment forms part of decisions taken by delegates at the party’s national conference in Kumasi.
