Techiman, Bono East — The National Youth Authority (NYA) has provided 365 apprentices with training tools and equipment as part of the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP) in the Bono East Region, aiming to enhance youth employability and self-reliance.
The items, which included 246 sewing machines, 22 hair dryers, and related accessories, were distributed to 67 artisans across the region’s 11 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs). These artisans are tasked with training the beneficiaries in various employable skills.
Mr. Kofi Baba, Bono East Regional Coordinator for NYA, said the recipients represent the first batch of 550 trainees under the programme, with a second batch in automobile engineering, carpentry, masonry, and construction skills set to begin soon.
“Apprentices must take their training seriously to acquire the skills necessary for decent employment,” he urged.
Mr. Francis Owusu Antwi, Bono East Regional Minister, emphasized the government’s commitment to youth job creation, noting that the NAP targets individuals who have not had formal education. He also highlighted complementary initiatives such as the 24-hour economy markets and the Women Development Bank, which aim to support youth and women entrepreneurs.
Trainers, including Madam Alimatu Haruna, pledged to monitor proper usage of the tools to maximize benefits for apprentices, while beneficiaries expressed excitement over the opportunities. Miss Saviour Tiwah, 25, a fashion design trainee, called on the government to expand the programme to reach more unemployed young women in the region.
The initiative reflects the government’s broader strategy to equip youth with practical skills, reduce unemployment, and stimulate socio-economic development in Bono East.
