A road crash involving three vehicles on the Sege-Kasseh stretch of the Tema-Aflao Highway has claimed the life of a female passenger and left eight others injured.
The accident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Matsekorpe Junction, with two of the injured persons reportedly in critical condition and receiving treatment at the Sege Polyclinic.
The vehicles involved were two Opel Astra taxis and a Toyota Corolla.
According to eyewitnesses, the Toyota Corolla, with registration number GN 5838-20, was overtaking another vehicle when it collided with an Opel Astra A taxi, registered GE 1269-13.
An approaching Opel Astra A, with registration number AS 9643-13, subsequently crashed into the first taxi, causing significant damage to all three vehicles.
Mr Ofori Apronti, Assembly Member for the area, attributed some of the road safety concerns along the route to the practice of overloading by commercial vehicles.
He said overloaded taxis could compromise drivers’ ability to manoeuvre effectively, particularly when faced with sudden hazards or emergencies.
He consequently appealed to commercial drivers to exercise greater caution and strictly observe road safety regulations to help reduce crashes on the busy highway.
Mr Apronti said the driver of one of the Opel taxis was among the two persons in critical condition, while six other injured persons were also receiving treatment at the Sege Polyclinic.
Reverend Sampson Agbemabiase, Head Pastor of the Assemblies of God Church, Sege, who witnessed the crash, alleged that the Toyota Corolla was being driven at high speed while overtaking dangerously.
He said he narrowly avoided being caught up in the collision after swerving his vehicle.
“My car could have been involved if I had not swerved the Corolla. The driver was speeding and overtaking recklessly,” he said.
Rev. Agbemabiase also raised concerns about emergency response at accident scenes, calling for quicker intervention by emergency responders to improve the chances of saving victims.
Personnel from the Sege District Police Command were observed at the scene helping to control traffic and ease congestion resulting from the crash.
The incident has renewed calls for greater caution among motorists using the Tema-Aflao Highway, particularly commercial drivers, to prevent avoidable loss of lives.
