Parliament has paid tribute to the late Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Mahama Abubakari II, crediting his seven-year reign with helping to heal deep divisions and restore stability to the Dagbon Kingdom.
The tributes were made on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday following the formal notification of the House about the death of the late King.
The Member of Parliament for Yendi, Abdul-Fatawu Alhassan, said the late Ya-Na’s reign marked a significant period of reconciliation and renewal for Dagbon.
He praised the late King’s humility, wisdom and resilience, saying his leadership helped rebuild unity after years of conflict and grief.
According to him, the late Ya-Na’s reign was characterised by peace, reconciliation, youth empowerment and a commitment to rebuilding the Dagbon Kingdom.
The MP for Tamale South and Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, also commended the late King for his patience and consultative leadership.
He said the late Ya-Na’s ability to build consensus among stakeholders contributed significantly to the stability that followed his enskinment.
The MP for Gushegu, Hassan Tampuli, similarly described the late Overlord as a unifying leader who placed emphasis on development and the empowerment of young people.
Earlier in the day, chiefs from the Dagbon Kingdom formally informed the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, of the death of the late Ya-Na.
Ya-Na Mahama Abubakari II ascended the throne in 2019 after the resolution of the protracted succession dispute between the Abudu and Andani royal gates.
His reign has been widely associated with the restoration of peace and dignity to Dagbon following years of conflict.
For members of Parliament, his legacy will be defined largely by his role in consolidating reconciliation and unity in the Kingdom.
