Patience Enyonam Akyianu, the former Managing Director of Barclays Bank Ghana and Group Chief Executive Officer of Hollard Ghana, has reportedly died, bringing to an end the career of one of Ghana’s prominent financial services executives.
Her reported death was announced by the CEO Network Ghana, which described her as a distinguished chief executive and expressed condolences to her family, colleagues, friends and loved ones.
The circumstances surrounding her reported death had not been independently confirmed.
Mrs Akyianu spent more than two decades in banking and finance before making a major career transition into insurance, where she became the pioneer Group CEO of Hollard Ghana Holdings.
Her career in banking included a stint as Finance Director at Barclays Bank Ghana before she was appointed Managing Director, a position she held for five years.
A profile published by the Ghana Stock Exchange said she had more than 26 years of experience in banking and finance, including 17 years in banking before moving into the insurance sector in 2018.
She held an MBA in Finance and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, specialising in Accounting, from the University of Ghana Business School.
She was also a certified professional accountant and a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana.
Building Hollard’s Ghana operations
Mrs Akyianu joined Hollard Ghana in October 2018 as Chief Executive Officer of Hollard Ghana Holdings following the company’s expansion and the establishment of its group structure.
The development brought together Hollard Insurance Ghana, formerly Metropolitan Insurance, and Hollard Life Assurance Ghana.
As the group’s first CEO, she was tasked with leading the newly established organisation and strengthening its position in Ghana’s insurance industry.
Mrs Akyianu later described her move from banking into insurance as a “leap of faith”, saying she was motivated by the opportunity to build Hollard into a household name in Ghana.
She said the brand’s purpose, vision and business ethos attracted her to the new challenge despite her limited experience in the insurance industry at the time.
Her tenure at Hollard was associated with efforts to expand insurance access, develop new products and strengthen customer-focused solutions.
Focus on inclusion and innovation
One of the areas associated with her leadership was the drive to make insurance more accessible to individuals and businesses, particularly underserved segments of the market.
Hollard introduced products and partnerships designed to broaden access to insurance and provide protection for small businesses.
Among them was the Asomdwee insurance product, launched in partnership with the Ghana Enterprises Agency in 2021 to provide insurance cover tailored to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.
Mrs Akyianu said the initiative formed part of efforts to support business owners and protect their investments against unforeseen risks.
Her tenure also saw the company pursue new distribution channels, digital insurance solutions and initiatives focused on customer experience.
Recognition for financial-sector leadership
Mrs Akyianu’s work across banking and insurance earned her recognition within Ghana’s financial services industry.
In May 2025, she received the Millennium Excellence Award for Finance and Capital Market Excellence at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
The award cited her leadership at Barclays Bank Ghana and Hollard Ghana and her contribution to the development of Ghana’s finance and capital markets.
She was also recognised for her contribution to the adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards at Standard Chartered Bank and Barclays Bank Ghana, with the citation linking the development to greater transparency and discipline in banking.
Beyond her executive positions, Mrs Akyianu served on corporate boards and was a founding member of the Executive Women Network and the International Women’s Forum, Ghana.
Her reported passing has therefore been met with expressions of loss across Ghana’s business community, particularly among colleagues and institutions within the financial services sector.
