Thousands of pensioners under the Social Security and National Insurance Trust experienced uncertainty and frustration after a temporary technical disruption delayed the release of May 2026 pension payments.
Although payments began reflecting in accounts on Friday morning, many retirees had been unable to access their benefits on Thursday, May 21, sparking concern among beneficiaries who depend heavily on monthly pensions for survival.
The disruption affected pensioners across several banking halls, with some retirees initially left without information on the cause of the delay.
SSNIT management later confirmed that the May pension payments had been processed on Thursday and attributed the temporary interruption to technical challenges.
The Trust also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring timely and efficient payment of pensions.
Officials at Ghana Commercial Bank and Consolidated Bank Ghana confirmed on Friday that payments were actively being processed, with pensioners returning to banking halls to withdraw their funds.
Some retirees told the Ghana News Agency they had received payment alerts and successfully accessed their money after the delay was resolved.
Charles, a retired health worker, acknowledged the inconvenience but urged fellow pensioners to remain calm.
However, others expressed concern over the lack of early communication from authorities regarding the disruption.
Madam Betty, a retired administrator, said she only became aware of the problem after hearing discussions among pensioners.
“They should not delay our payment; if there is any challenge they should tell us early enough,” she said.
The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of many pensioners, especially retirees who rely almost entirely on monthly SSNIT payments to meet daily living expenses, healthcare costs and family obligations.
For many beneficiaries, even short delays in pension disbursement can trigger financial distress and uncertainty.
