Pharmacists Poised to Revolutionize Healthcare Delivery Through AI and Expanded Roles

Community pharmacists in Ghana are redefining their roles in the health sector by embracing artificial intelligence (AI), digital tools, and leadership development to deliver more efficient and patient-centred care.

This was the key message from Dr. Emmanuel Kwaku Ireland, Chairman of the Community Practice Pharmacists Association (CPPA), at a seminar marking the third Annual Community Pharmacy Month Celebration (3CPMC25) in Accra.

Held under the theme “We Are Doing More, So Consult Your Pharmacist!”, the event focused on positioning pharmacists as vital contributors to healthcare systems and champions of innovation in public health. Dr. Ireland highlighted how pharmacists are now integrating cutting-edge technologies like AI into everyday practice to enhance decision-making, reduce service time, and improve treatment outcomes.

“Artificial intelligence is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity,” he declared. “It equips pharmacists with real-time knowledge, which is critical in healthcare. We are already using AI to streamline operations and elevate care.”

According to Dr. Ireland, the use of AI has helped cut patient interaction time by up to 60%, allowing pharmacists to see more patients while maintaining high service standards. He emphasized that the daily data generated by community pharmacies can be harnessed through AI to inform national policy and improve public health planning.

Beyond technology, Dr. Ireland underscored the evolving roles of pharmacists in Ghana. He noted that practitioners are aligning with international standards, providing services that extend well beyond medication dispensing. These include vaccination, medication therapy management (MTM), chronic disease management, health promotion, and even administering injectable contraceptives.

“Close to 1,000 pharmacists are now trained in vaccination, while hundreds more have been equipped to deliver MTM and sexual and reproductive health services,” he said. “Our responsibilities have grown—and so must our capacity.”

A notable development is the emergence of Graphopharmacists—a new breed of professionals blending graphic design and pharmaceutical knowledge to better educate clients and communities about health risks and medication use.

Leadership and business acumen were also major themes of the seminar. Dr. Ireland encouraged pharmacists to see themselves not only as caregivers but also as influential leaders and strategic thinkers in their communities.

“Leadership is not about a title—it’s about driving change,” he said. “We must build teams, solve problems, and be active voices in public health.”

Echoing this sentiment, Mr. William Kofi Nti, CEO of Add Pharma Ghana Ltd, called on pharmacists—especially the younger generation—to embrace innovation, business leadership, and mentorship as tools to thrive in an evolving healthcare environment.

He urged policymakers to collaborate more closely with pharmacy leaders in shaping national health strategies, particularly as pharmacists continue to expand their reach into underserved communities.

Dr. Ireland concluded by calling for stricter enforcement of pharmacy regulations and public vigilance against unsafe drug peddling. “Medicines are not meant to be sold on the streets,” he warned. “We must protect our communities from harmful practices and promote licensed pharmaceutical care.”

As Ghana’s healthcare landscape shifts toward a more inclusive, tech-driven future, pharmacists appear ready to take on expanded roles—not just as dispensers of medicine, but as digital innovators, educators, entrepreneurs, and community health leaders.
