Three suspects, including a woman, have been arrested and remanded by an Accra Circuit Court over their alleged involvement in a large-scale SIM box fraud operation in Sakumono, Tema West.
The accused—Olanrewaju Adedeji Segun, Timileyin Fakunle, and Olamide Roheemot—are said to have worked as data managers in a scheme that disrupted victims’ mobile communications, siphoned funds through mobile money platforms, and later converted the proceeds into cryptocurrency for transfer outside Ghana.
According to prosecutors, the operation allegedly ran from June 2025 to January 2026 and involved the movement of about $700,000 through crypto channels.
Three other suspects, identified as Adebowole Pelumi, Michael Taiwo, and a fugitive known only as Tommy, are currently at large and believed to be linked to the network.
The case, presented before the court by Chief Inspector Wisdom Alowru, revealed that the accused persons are Nigerian nationals residing at Sakumono in the Tema area. They are facing charges including operating an electronic communication service without a licence from the National Communications Authority (NCA), possession of unregistered SIM cards, obstruction of communication, and conspiracy to commit crime.
Investigators told the court that intelligence led police to House BE 57 on Celebrity Hills Avenue, where a coordinated raid uncovered a suspected “phone farming” setup. Officers reportedly seized 52 SIM boxes, 26 desktop computers, over 1,000 mobile phones, unregistered SIM cards, and networking equipment allegedly used for the operation.
Further forensic analysis by the Cyber Security Authority indicated that the setup was designed to facilitate large-scale telecom fraud, intercept communications, and process illicit financial transactions.
The court has remanded the three accused persons into custody, with proceedings set to continue on June 4, 2026, while investigations into the wider network continue.
