A targeted security operation by the Ghana Police Service has led to the arrest of 19 suspects in parts of Kumasi, as authorities intensify efforts to dismantle criminal networks in the metropolis.
The swoop, carried out by the Inspector General of Police’s Special Operations Team, focused on identified hotspots including Alaba and Thinker—areas flagged through intelligence as centres for drug peddling and related criminal activities.
Police said the operation forms part of a broader strategy to curb rising concerns over robbery, drug abuse, violent attacks, and illegal arms possession in the city.
During the exercise, officers conducted coordinated patrols and systematic searches of pedestrians and business premises. The operation extended to several inner-city locations, including areas around the Manhyia Palace.
Authorities reported the seizure of suspected narcotics, including dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp, as well as substances suspected to be heroin or cocaine. Other items linked to drug use were also retrieved.
One suspect, identified as a shop operator, was arrested after a search of her premises uncovered quantities of suspected illegal drugs. Additional arrests were made as officers encountered groups allegedly engaged in the sale and use of illicit substances.
All suspects are currently in custody at the Suntreso Police District Headquarters, assisting with investigations. The seized items have been forwarded for forensic examination to support prosecution.
Police officials emphasised that the operation was conducted professionally and in line with established procedures, adding that similar exercises would continue across the Ashanti Region.
The Special Operations Team reaffirmed its commitment to sustained patrols, intelligence-led interventions, and community collaboration to improve public safety and restore confidence in law enforcement.
