In a bold and strategic crackdown on illicit drug trafficking, the Eastern Regional Police Command has intercepted two tipper trucks transporting 150 sacks of suspected cannabis, cleverly concealed beneath mounds of sand.
The operation, which took place near Apesua, close to Nkurakan, demonstrates the increasing ingenuity of drug traffickers and the rising vigilance of Ghana’s security agencies in combating the narcotics trade.
According to a statement issued by Superintendent Ebenezer Tetteh, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Regional Police Command, the two Howo Sino trucks, bearing registration numbers GN 993-14 and GG 3674-20, were stopped following intelligence-led surveillance.
“The dried leaves were hidden beneath tipped sand, likely in an attempt to evade detection at police checkpoints,” the statement noted.
Two individuals, believed to be the drivers of the vehicles, were arrested on the spot and are currently assisting the Police with ongoing investigations. Their identities have been withheld for security reasons.
A Growing Challenge for Law Enforcement
This latest bust highlights a concerning trend in the sophistication of drug trafficking methods, with traffickers increasingly using commercial and industrial vehicles to transport narcotics across regions undetected.
Superintendent Tetteh assured the public that the Police remain resolute in their efforts to disrupt drug networks operating within the country. He emphasized that the interdiction was the result of coordinated efforts and credible intelligence gathered over a period of time.
“This is part of a broader initiative to clamp down on the movement of illegal drugs along our major transportation corridors,” he said, adding that updates on the investigation will be shared in due course.
Call for Public Cooperation
The Police further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activity, especially involving large haulage vehicles operating outside normal business routines.
The successful interception reinforces the importance of community intelligence and collaborative policing in tackling the drug menace—a fight that continues to pose serious public health and security threats across Ghana.
