Police Hospital Gets First Paediatric Wards in 50 Years as Mahama Opens 85-Bed Complex

President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned a new 85-bed ward complex at the Ghana Police Hospital in Accra, introducing dedicated paediatric wards and expanding the facility’s capacity to more than 200 beds.

The development marks a major expansion of healthcare infrastructure at the hospital, which has served police officers and their dependants for about five decades but has increasingly taken on the responsibility of treating members of the general public.

Named the Christian Tetteh Yohuno Ward Complex, the facility is expected to improve access to specialised medical care, reduce referrals to other hospitals and ease pressure on existing wards.

The complex was commissioned on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, with Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno describing the project as a significant investment in the health and welfare of police personnel.

“This landmark facility marks a major step in standardising health as a fundamental human right for the Ghana Police Service. This principle matters because officers’ ability to protect life and property depends largely on their physical and mental well-being,” he said.

First paediatric wards introduced

One of the key features of the new complex is the provision of dedicated male and female paediatric wards, which the IGP said were the first of their kind at the hospital since its establishment about 50 years ago.

The facility also contains separate medical and surgical wards for male and female patients, expanding the hospital’s capacity to accommodate patients requiring different forms of treatment.

Other installations include diagnostic and patient-monitoring equipment, an in-house laboratory, a pharmacy, administrative offices and an elevator to facilitate the movement of patients and medical supplies.

The complex also has parking space for approximately 50 vehicles and a welfare shop intended to serve patients and other users of the facility.

According to Mr Yohuno, the additional infrastructure will enable the hospital to provide more specialised services within its premises, reducing the need to transfer patients to other health facilities.

“Most importantly, the complex will allow more specialised care to be provided on site, reducing the need to transfer patients elsewhere and helping to minimise the associated costs and inconvenience,” he said.

Growing demand puts pressure on hospital

The IGP explained that although the Police Hospital was originally established to cater primarily for police officers and their dependants, its responsibilities had expanded considerably over the years.

The facility now treats members of the general public, particularly during emergencies, and receives accident victims, officers injured in the line of duty, unidentified persons, and victims of violent crimes and sexual abuse.

He said the growing demand for its services had placed increasing pressure on existing infrastructure, making further investment necessary to improve service delivery.

The new complex is expected to provide additional space and equipment to help the hospital respond more effectively to these demands.

More investments in police healthcare

Mr Yohuno also outlined other interventions undertaken at the hospital, including the renovation of its emergency area, refurbishment of the mortuary, establishment of a facility for unidentified accident and emergency victims, and introduction of electronic medical records.

He further disclosed that the approximately 100-bed Tamale Police Hospital had been completed and equipped, extending investment in police healthcare infrastructure beyond the national capital.

However, the IGP cautioned that maintaining the new ward complex would be crucial to preserving the benefits of the investment, stressing the need for continued attention to its upkeep.

The commissioning adds to ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery within the Ghana Police Service while improving the hospital’s ability to serve both security personnel and the wider public.
