A routine police checkpoint operation in the Central Region has resulted in the seizure of 14 boxes of shotgun ammunition and the arrest of a driver who allegedly failed to provide the required documentation for transporting the items.
The interception occurred during a snap checkpoint exercise conducted by police officers at Apam along the Accra-Cape Coast highway. The vehicle involved, a Toyota Voxy with registration number GT 9748-26, was travelling from Accra to Assin Fosu when it was stopped for inspection.
According to police sources, officers discovered the ammunition during a search of the vehicle. The driver, identified as Francis Ampomah, was reportedly unable to produce permits or other documents authorising the transportation of the ammunition.
Following the discovery, police escorted both the vehicle and its cargo to the Apam Police Station for further examination and documentation.
Mr Ampomah has since been taken into custody and is assisting investigators as they work to determine the ownership, source, and intended destination of the ammunition.
The seized ammunition remains under police control while investigations continue. Authorities are also examining whether any laws governing the transportation and possession of ammunition may have been breached.
The operation forms part of ongoing security measures aimed at monitoring the movement of potentially sensitive materials on major highways and preventing unlawful activities.
