Police and emergency officials have launched an investigation into a deadly explosion at Aboso-Breman Junction in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality of the Western Region, which claimed three lives and left five others injured.
The explosion occurred on Tuesday, August 5, prompting a swift response from the Western Central Regional Police Command and other security agencies.
The injured victims were rushed to the Apinto Government Hospital and Tarkwa Municipal Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.
Senior police officers, led by Western Central Regional Police Commander COP Desmond Owusu Boampong and Deputy Regional Commander ACP Bismark Agyapong, visited the scene to assess the extent of the damage and oversee the initial stages of the investigation.
Authorities have not yet officially established the cause of the explosion.
However, mining expert Frank Denkyi Adjei, who briefed the police delegation at the scene, said preliminary observations suggested that explosives may have been stored above ground.
“Typically, the explosives were stored on the surface, and the amount of energy released indicates that a gun may have been fired in the direction of the explosives, triggering the blast,” he said.
Following the inspection, the police team visited the hospitals where the injured victims were receiving treatment.
The bodies of the three deceased persons have been deposited at the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital mortuary pending preservation and autopsy.
The Ghana News Agency gathered that the Western Central Regional Police Command, working with other relevant stakeholders, has implemented safety measures in the affected area to protect residents and prevent further danger.
Police say investigations are continuing to determine the exact cause of the explosion and establish the circumstances that led to the incident.
