Ghana’s top police leadership has stepped in to address mounting public concern over alleged misconduct involving officers, as Ibrahim Mahama engages directly with the Police Management Board in Accra.
The high-level meeting forms part of an ongoing investigation into claims that the renowned artist was assaulted by individuals believed to be linked to a special police unit on March 21. The development underscores growing pressure on the Ghana Police Service to ensure transparency and accountability.
While the unit in question—often referred to as the “Black Maria” and reportedly led by Abdul Bawa Jalil—has firmly denied any involvement, authorities have escalated the matter by referring it to the Police Professional Standards Bureau for independent review.
In a bid to establish the facts, the Inspector-General of Police has also summoned the Northern Regional Police Commander to assist with investigations, signaling the seriousness with which the case is being handled.
The incident has sparked widespread public interest, with many calling for a thorough and impartial probe, particularly given Mahama’s prominence and the nature of the allegations.
Police officials say the engagement with senior leadership is expected to clarify key details and guide the next steps, with further updates to be communicated as the investigation unfolds.
