Poor Road Access Threatens Boti Waterfalls’ Tourism Potential

The iconic Boti Waterfalls in the Eastern Region risks losing its appeal as a major eco-tourism destination due to the deteriorating Huhunya access road, a situation that has slowed visitor numbers and stifled local economic activity.

First-time visitor Sammy described the journey from the junction to the waterfalls as “extremely horrible,” reflecting the frustrations of tourists navigating the rough terrain. The road’s poor condition has not only discouraged tourists but also limited business opportunities for local vendors and service providers.

A Historic Tourist Attraction at Risk

Located in Huhunya, Yilo Krobo Municipality, Boti Waterfalls is Ghana’s only twin-waterfall, discovered in 1906 by farmer Nene Tettey Ngwoa. The 30.5-meter-high waterfalls, sourced from a river in the Ahenkwa farming community, are celebrated for their scenic rainbows, breezy environment, and unique features such as the umbrella rock, three-headed palm tree, and fertility stones.

Visitors also enjoy climbing the 250 stairs to take part in canoe rides, explore sound caves, and witness local cultural heritage sites. However, the allure of these experiences is increasingly undermined by poor infrastructure.

Economic and Investment Implications

Local stakeholders warn that the bad road has reduced patronage drastically. Receptionist Aaron Asuma noted that the waterfalls previously employed around 100 people, but now only nine staff remain due to declining tourism. Tour guides and market women echoed the call for government intervention, highlighting that poor road conditions deter potential investors and limit the establishment of hotels, restaurants, and other commercial ventures.

Mr. Asuma stressed that improving road access would not only revive tourism but also create thousands of jobs, boost local businesses, and stimulate socio-economic development in the area.

Safety and Facility Concerns

Beyond road access, visitors face safety challenges such as the absence of streetlights, directional signage, fuel stations, and vehicle garages. These gaps further discourage tourism and make it difficult to maintain the site’s appeal.

Call for Action

As Ghana observes Ghana Month, local authorities are urged to prioritise the rehabilitation of the Huhunya road and enhance facilities at Boti Waterfalls. Stakeholders believe that investing in infrastructure and security measures will preserve Ghana’s natural heritage, attract tourists, and catalyse economic growth for surrounding communities.
