A recent survey conducted by the Office of the President between October and December 2024 has revealed that social media is now the leading source of information for Ghanaians seeking updates on government activities and services.
The Public Opinion Survey, which collected responses from over 1,000 people across all 16 regions, highlighted the National Identification Authority (NIA) as the most recognised Office of Government Machinery (OGM) institution, with the Ghana Card issuance being the most widely accessed public service.
Focus on Digital Communication and Transparency
Speaking at an Information Dissemination Session in Accra, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, Deputy Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, emphasised the need for OGM institutions to leverage digital platforms to improve public awareness and engagement.
“By the third quarter of this year, we will publish a Performance Ranking Index of all institutions under the Office of Government Machinery,” she announced, encouraging OGM agencies to invest in digital tools, active social media engagement, and regular website updates to boost their visibility and public trust.
Improving Public Perception and Service Delivery
Madam Bampoe Addo urged OGM institutions to prioritise transparency by publishing annual reports, financial statements, and operational data to improve public perception. She also recommended public outreach campaigns, townhall meetings, and staff training to enhance customer service and responsiveness.
“It is imperative for OGM institutions to have functional, user-friendly websites with mechanisms for public feedback,” she stressed, noting that this approach would foster greater trust in government services.
Dr. Evans Aggrey-Darko, Head of the Civil Service, echoed this sentiment, calling on OGM institutions to reduce human interactions in service delivery to minimise corruption risks. He also urged management to make better use of internal auditors to prevent financial malfeasance.
Focus on Efficiency and Technology
Madam Shamima Muslim, Deputy Government Spokesperson, highlighted the importance of aligning government services with the needs of Ghanaians through effective implementation of the survey’s recommendations.
“With the right approach, these reforms can significantly improve operational efficiency and build public trust in our institutions,” she said, urging agencies to adopt more interactive, user-friendly digital platforms.
Key Institutions Under OGM
The OGM includes a wide range of government bodies such as the State Protocol, Council of State, State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), Ghana Aids Commission, Micro and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Ghana News Agency, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, and the Information Services Department.
These institutions form the backbone of the presidency, supporting the executive arm of government in implementing policy interventions for improved service delivery and better living standards.
As the government moves to publish its first Performance Ranking Index later this year, OGM institutions are expected to step up their efforts to align their services with the evolving needs of the public, leveraging technology to bridge gaps in communication, transparency, and service delivery.
