In the wake of a devastating helicopter crash that claimed the lives of two cabinet ministers, President John Dramani Mahama has acted swiftly to safeguard the continuity of key government functions by assigning interim ministerial responsibilities to senior officials.
The crash, which occurred on Wednesday, August 6, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, resulted in the tragic deaths of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, among six others. The officials were en route to Obuasi to participate in a government-led programme on responsible mining when their military aircraft went down.
Recognizing the critical roles both ministries play in national security and environmental governance, the President has appointed Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson to act as Minister for Defence. In a parallel move, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah, has been directed to assume temporary oversight of the Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation portfolio.
A statement from the Office of the President, signed by Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, emphasized the need to preserve institutional momentum and policy coherence during a moment of national crisis.
“These appointments are to ensure that there is no vacuum in the leadership of these strategic ministries as the nation mourns,” the statement noted.
Government sources indicate that both appointees are expected to hit the ground running, with defence and environmental policy continuity high on the agenda. Their appointments come at a time when Ghana is grappling with complex issues including regional security threats, environmental degradation, and illegal mining — matters both late ministers were actively addressing before their untimely deaths.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces and other state agencies have launched a formal investigation into the cause of the crash, which has left the nation reeling.
As flags fly at half-mast across the country, preparations are underway for a state-led memorial, with President Mahama expected to deliver a national tribute in honour of the deceased.
The tragedy has united Ghanaians in mourning, but also drawn praise for the President’s measured and timely leadership in averting administrative disruption.
