The members of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), meeting at the 67th Annual General Conference on the theme “Strengthening Public–Private Partnerships (PPPs) for Sustainable Healthcare Delivery” at the New Examination Centre, University of Cape Coast, from 10th–16th November 2025, have concluded their 2025 internal elections with Prof. Ernest Yorke emerging as President.
Prof. Yorke secured a decisive victory over his closest contender, Dr. Justice Yankson, in a nationwide electronic ballot, earning more than half of the total valid votes cast. The conference also elected a new slate of national executives who will steer the affairs of the Association for the next two years.
The outcome reflects strong confidence in Prof. Yorke’s vision for the GMA and positions him to lead the Association’s negotiations, policy engagements, and professional development agenda in the coming years. He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the full implementation of members’ conditions of service and pledged to work collaboratively with all relevant stakeholders to harness the full potential of public–private partnerships in improving healthcare quality and delivery nationwide.
A seasoned academic, respected educator, and passionate health advocate, Prof. Yorke brings nearly two decades of dedicated service within the GMA to his new role. His leadership journey includes key positions such as:
• Member, Junior Doctors’ Representative Council
• Divisional Secretary
• Divisional Vice Chair
• Member, GMA Council
His steady progression through the ranks represents a well-rounded exposure to the Association’s governance and the evolving needs of Ghanaian doctors—from specialist training and infrastructural development to remuneration and health policy implementation.
His presidency is therefore expected to play a pivotal role in shaping national health policy, including strengthening specialist training, enhancing public health preparedness, and deepening collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
Prof. Yorke’s election has generated widespread anticipation for renewed advocacy and meaningful reforms within the medical profession. With his strong background in policy, training, and governance, members are hopeful that his tenure will deliver strengthened welfare systems, improved working conditions, and a reinvigorated voice for Ghana’s medical workforce.
The Electoral Committee Chair, Dr. Rita Larsen-Reindorf, officially declared the results on November 15, 2025.
