Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), has publicly addressed his arraignment linked to the controversial Sky Train project for the first time, firmly asserting his innocence and acknowledging the robust support from political allies and loved ones.
In a heartfelt statement released on Friday, May 30, the former Education Minister expressed confidence in the justice system and welcomed the chance to clear his name. He emphasized his dedication to transparency and accountability throughout the legal process.
“I have pleaded not guilty and remain committed to upholding justice and fairness,” Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi declared.
The $2.3 billion Sky Train initiative, launched in 2019 to transform Ghana’s urban transport, was halted amid procurement and financial scrutiny, leading to ongoing investigations and prosecutions involving several former GIIF officials.
Reflecting on the challenges following his arraignment, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi expressed deep appreciation for the unwavering encouragement from his family, legal team, and notably, prominent NPP figures such as former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong and Techiman South MP Martin Kwaku Agyei Mensah Korsah.
Describing their support as a source of strength, he praised their “Santaclausian brotherliness” and “enduring family ties,” underscoring the personal and political solidarity that has buoyed him through this difficult period.
As the case unfolds, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi’s statement signals a steadfast resolve to confront the allegations while highlighting the complex interplay of legal, political, and personal dimensions surrounding the Sky Train controversy.
