Professor Title Row: GTEC Says Ayensu-Danquah Misrepresented Role

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has reaffirmed its mandate to protect the integrity of academic titles in the country, cautioning against what it described as the misleading use of professorial designations.

In a statement addressing the credentials of Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, GTEC clarified that she does not hold the title of professor in any form. The Commission explained that while Dr. Ayensu-Danquah once held an Adjunct Assistant Professor position abroad, the omission of the word “Adjunct” created a false impression of a substantive professorship.

According to GTEC, the position of Adjunct Assistant Professor is a non-tenure track role which, within Ghana’s academic framework, equates roughly to that of a part-time lecturer — not a senior lecturer and far from the rank of professor.

“Based on the above, the Commission concludes that Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah does not hold the title of Professor in any capacity,” the letter stated.

The Commission has urged her employers to ensure she refrains from presenting herself as a professor, warning that failure to comply could trigger legal action for public deception.

Education observers say the move underscores GTEC’s growing vigilance in enforcing academic standards, especially at a time when the misuse of academic titles risks undermining public trust in Ghana’s higher education system.
