Drivers and commuters in Keta Municipality, Volta Region, are expressing growing concern over a potential fuel price increase, which could see petrol rise to between GH₵17 and GH₵18 per litre in April, according to the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC).

The anticipated hike, attributed to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and disruptions in global crude oil markets, comes as many residents are already struggling with high operating and transport costs.

Drivers Warn of Economic Strain

Mr. Manyo Manfred, a driver on the Keta–Accra route, highlighted the impact of rising fuel prices on transportation businesses. “Operating costs, including vehicle maintenance and spare parts, remain high. Without relief, sustaining our services is becoming increasingly difficult,” he said. He urged authorities to consider COPEC’s recommendation to build strategic fuel reserves to stabilise prices around GH₵14–15 per litre, cushioning consumers against sudden shocks.

Despite growing pressure, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has resisted approving fare increases, further straining drivers’ livelihoods.

Commuters Call for Government Action

Commuter Madam Evelyn Ahashie appealed to driver unions to maintain or reduce fares to ease the burden on the public and local businesses. She also urged the government to engage in a national dialogue on the fuel pricing formula and review the price deregulation policy to prevent sharp, destabilising increases.

Madam Ahashie warned that continued volatility in fuel prices could ripple across the economy, raising transport and commodity costs, and called for long-term solutions such as investment in renewable energy and improved public transport systems to reduce reliance on imported fuel.

COPEC Proposes Stabilisation Measures

In response to the ongoing concerns, COPEC has proposed a Special Petroleum Reserve Fund to protect consumers during periods of unfavourable global market conditions, aiming to stabilise fuel prices and safeguard livelihoods.

The situation in Keta underscores the urgent need for sustainable interventions to shield residents from fluctuating fuel costs, with policymakers urged to prioritise consumer welfare and economic resilience.
