An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail of GHS200,000 to Eliasu Abubakar, a 38-year-old public servant facing charges of defrauding a caterer of GHS265,000 in a recruitment and visa scam. Abubakar stands accused of promising to secure positions in the security services and Canadian visas for the complainant’s relatives but allegedly failed to deliver on these claims.
The complainant, Hassan Mohammed from Odumase Krobo, entrusted Abubakar with the funds based on the latter’s assertion of political connections to the ruling New Patriotic Party government, which reportedly helped gain his confidence. Although Abubakar initially admitted to the offense and refunded part of the money, he failed to complete the repayment.
Following his initial arrest by the Nima District Police, the case was escalated to the Accra Regional Criminal Investigations Department for thorough investigation. After being granted police enquiry bail, Abubakar absconded, triggering a manhunt that culminated in his re-arrest.
The accused has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to appear in court again on July 28, 2025, as the legal process continues.
