The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has tightened oversight of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), issuing a 48-hour deadline for the power distributor to address mounting complaints about the rapid depletion of prepaid electricity credits.
The directive follows an emergency meeting convened by the regulator after widespread public dissatisfaction over recent prepaid billing anomalies.
PURC has instructed ECG to submit a comprehensive report detailing the root causes of the problem and the corrective measures being implemented to restore consumer confidence.
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Thursday, February 26, Acting Executive Secretary of PURC, Shafic Suleman, stressed that consumer protection remains the Commission’s top priority.
“The consumer must be protected, safeguarded, and be able to have equal access to ECG, and that is the focus. ECG is supposed to work timeously to solve the problem,” he stated.
Dr. Suleman indicated that while the Commission expects ECG to resolve the issue promptly, it is prepared to invoke lawful regulatory measures if the company fails to comply with the directive.
The move signals increased regulatory scrutiny as public frustration grows, with consumers demanding transparency and accountability in the prepaid electricity system.
