The Ghana Red Cross Society has raised alarm over delays in passing the long-awaited Ghana Red Cross Bill, warning that the absence of a modern legal framework is undermining its ability to respond effectively to growing humanitarian crises.
Speaking at the 2026 World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day celebration in Accra, President of the Society, Dr. Edward Donkor, said repeated parliamentary transitions have stalled efforts to replace outdated legislation governing the organisation.
He noted that the delay is weakening coordination, accountability and operational efficiency at a time when Ghana is facing increasing threats from floods, disease outbreaks and sanitation-related emergencies.
Dr. Donkor also expressed concern over what he described as the gradual erosion of the Society’s role as a key humanitarian partner to government, citing reduced participation in national planning processes.
He called on Parliament of Ghana to fast-track the bill, arguing that stronger legal backing would improve resource mobilisation, partnerships and emergency response efforts for vulnerable communities.
