The Northern Regional Police Command has intensified its anti-drug operations in the Tamale Metropolis through its Special Operations unit, “Red Maria,” following the withdrawal of the IGP’s “Black Maria” task force.
The renewed crackdown has resulted in the arrest of 37 suspects over a one-week period, as part of a series of intelligence-led swoops targeting known drug hotspots across the city and nearby communities.
According to the Police Command, the operations—led by Superintendent John Danso, ASP Rashid Jeremiah, and ASP Iddrisu Amin—covered areas including Aboabo, Sakasaka, Choggu, Savelugu, Red Clay, and Lamashigu. The exercises involved between 31 and 35 officers conducting coordinated raids.
The highest number of arrests was recorded on March 18, when 15 suspects were picked up in Choggu and Savelugu. Police also expressed concern over the arrest of a 15-year-old among the suspects, highlighting growing fears about youth involvement in drug-related activities.
Earlier operations on March 16 and 17 led to multiple arrests at locations such as the Metro Mass Transport Yard and Ward K, while subsequent raids on March 19 and 20 added to the total number of suspects in custody. Substances suspected to be narcotics were retrieved and are being processed as evidence.
The Command noted that the continued operations signal a shift towards sustained, locally driven policing to maintain gains made under the previous special task force.
Residents in affected communities have welcomed the ongoing presence of the police, expressing hope that the intensified efforts will reduce drug trafficking and improve safety.
The Police have urged the public to support the fight by providing timely information to help combat drug abuse and related crimes in the region.
