Fathers have been encouraged to embrace responsible parenting and make decisions that promote the wellbeing and future success of their children.
The call was made by Reverend Deladem Dogbatse of the Kharis Empowerment Centre at Sakumono during a Father’s Day service held on Sunday to celebrate and honour fathers for their role in family and society.
According to Rev. Dogbatse, fatherhood extends beyond biological responsibility and requires active involvement in the upbringing, protection and development of children.
He stressed that fathers play a critical role in shaping the character and future of their children through the values they demonstrate and the guidance they provide.
“Fathers have a duty to lead, teach, provide for and protect their children, whether biological or adopted, from the dangers of childhood and guide them safely into adulthood,” he said.
The clergyman noted that while no father is perfect, men can positively influence their children by serving as role models and instilling principles that help them become responsible and productive members of society.
He urged fathers to avoid behaviours that could undermine family unity and healthy child development, including selfishness, favouritism, neglect and a lack of love and care.
Drawing lessons from biblical accounts, Rev. Dogbatse explained that selfish decisions by parents can have lasting consequences for children. He also warned that favouritism among siblings often creates resentment and division within families.
The reverend further emphasised the importance of fathers remaining actively involved in the lives of their children, cautioning against neglecting parental responsibilities.
Using the example of Eli in the Bible, he noted that failure to properly guide and discipline children could result in negative outcomes despite a parent’s personal achievements or status.
Rev. Dogbatse also called on fathers and mothers to work together in raising their children, stressing that effective parenting requires cooperation and consistency between both parents.
He advised fathers not to undermine their spouses by issuing conflicting instructions to children, but rather to support one another in providing clear direction and discipline within the home.
The minister additionally encouraged parents to nurture the spiritual lives of their children through prayer, biblical teachings and Christian values.
The Father’s Day celebration formed part of activities observed worldwide in June to recognise the contributions of fathers and father figures to families and communities.
Rev. Dogbatse concluded by urging fathers to leave positive legacies through responsible leadership, love and commitment to the holistic development of their children.
