Concerns over increasing divorce cases in Ghana have prompted renewed calls for couples to strengthen commitment and return to foundational values in marriage.
Bright Amankwah, District Pastor of the Church of Pentecost in Dawhenya, says the growing trend of marital breakdowns reflects a shift in attitudes toward marriage, where challenges are increasingly seen as grounds for separation.
He cited data from District Assemblies indicating that more than half of registered marriages are dissolved annually in some areas, describing the situation as deeply worrying.
According to him, many couples are entering marriage without a full understanding of its long-term demands, often focusing on favourable conditions while overlooking the realities of hardship and sacrifice.
He argued that marriage should be treated as a lifelong commitment rather than a temporary arrangement, stressing that endurance, mutual support, and shared responsibility are essential to sustaining relationships.
Pastor Amankwah also highlighted the importance of emotional stability within homes, urging spouses—particularly husbands—to provide support and security for their partners, both materially and psychologically.
He emphasised that strong marriages are built on consistency and dedication, not convenience, and encouraged couples to seek guidance and maintain open communication during difficult periods.
The pastor further noted that stable families play a critical role in shaping society, adding that preserving marriages contributes to social order and long-term community development.
His remarks come amid broader public discussions on family values and the need to address factors contributing to rising divorce rates across the country.
