The Western Region has recorded a slight but concerning rise in hypertension cases, increasing from 2.96% in 2023 to 3.11% by the end of 2024, according to Dr. Gifty Amugi, Acting Western Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
These figures reflect only those who have visited health facilities for blood pressure checks, suggesting many others may be unaware of their condition.
Speaking during this year’s World Hypertension Day observance in Takoradi, held under the theme “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer,” Dr. Amugi emphasized the silent danger of unmanaged hypertension, which can lead to fatal complications.
To tackle the growing health threat, the Western Regional Health Directorate has launched an ambitious campaign aiming to screen 66,000 individuals across the region. So far, over 8,000 people have been screened at various locations including schools, markets, lorry parks, workplaces, and religious centers.
Dr. Amugi stressed the importance of regular blood pressure monitoring and early detection in preventing serious health outcomes. She urged all adults to take advantage of the screening exercise and embrace lifestyle changes that support healthy blood pressure levels.
The Regional Minister, Mr. Joseph Nelson, praised healthcare workers for their dedication to raising awareness and called on community stakeholders to support the screening initiative. He encouraged the public to actively participate in the campaign and commit to healthier living to curb the rise of hypertension in the region.
