…As Amewu Faces Investigation
The failed $2 million SkyTrain project has once again come under public scrutiny as former Minister for Railways Development, John-Peter Amewu, was briefly detained by National Security for questioning.
His arrest, which took place on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, marks a significant development in the ongoing probe into Ghana’s ambitious but unrealized urban rail transport initiative.
The SkyTrain project was envisioned as a transformative solution to ease congestion in Ghana’s cities.
However, despite a $2 million government commitment, the project never took off, raising concerns about financial mismanagement. Investigators are now focusing on how funds were allocated and whether due diligence was exercised in the agreement’s execution.
Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, stated in a press briefing on March 24 that the SkyTrain initiative failed to yield results, further intensifying pressure for accountability.
He assured the public that prosecutions related to the deal would commence by mid-April 2025, with efforts underway to recover any misused funds.
Amewu, who played a key role in overseeing Ghana’s railway development, has since been released after interrogation.
While details of the case remain undisclosed, authorities confirm that those implicated are cooperating with investigators.
The controversy surrounding the SkyTrain project has reignited debates on transparency and accountability in government contracts. Many Ghanaians are watching closely to see if this case will set a precedent for stricter oversight in future infrastructural investments.
As investigations progress, the unfolding developments will determine whether this failed project will result in real consequences for those responsible or simply fade into history as another costly misstep in Ghana’s infrastructure ambitions.
However, he was later released.
