SEC, Digital Asset Industry Deepen Engagement on Regulation and Compliance Framework

Ghana’s evolving digital asset landscape received a boost as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) engaged industry leaders on strengthening regulatory clarity, compliance standards and responsible innovation.

The engagement followed a high-level meeting between officials of the SEC and executives of the Chamber of Digital Assets and Blockchain Innovation (CDABI) in Accra.

The Chamber’s delegation, led by its President, Caleb Kwaku Afaglo, reaffirmed its commitment to serving as a structured interface between regulators and market participants to promote supervisory efficiency and policy coherence.

According to a statement issued after the meeting, discussions were described as strategic and aligned with Ghana’s emerging regulatory framework for virtual assets.

A central feature of the dialogue was CDABI’s upcoming national symposium on virtual assets and financial services, to which the SEC has been formally invited. The event is expected to convene regulators, financial institutions, compliance experts, technology providers and other ecosystem stakeholders to deliberate on investor protection, Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) standards, and frameworks for responsible innovation.

Another key highlight was the Chamber’s AML Officer Training and Awareness Programme, developed in partnership with the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). The initiative is designed to strengthen institutional capacity by equipping compliance officers, risk managers and operational leaders with advanced expertise in blockchain transaction monitoring, digital asset risk assessment, governance and regulatory reporting.

Director-General of the SEC, James Klutse Avedzi, underscored the importance of industry-led certification pathways that align with regulatory expectations. He noted that enhancing professional competence across the ecosystem would improve supervisory effectiveness, reduce compliance gaps and reinforce market integrity.

Mr Avedzi stressed that regulation and ethical responsibility are shared obligations between the regulator and industry players.

“This reflects the evolving regulatory philosophy within Ghana’s digital financial landscape: innovation must be matched with disciplined governance and ethical market conduct,” he said.

The meeting signals growing collaboration between regulators and digital asset stakeholders as Ghana works to build a transparent, compliant and innovation-driven financial ecosystem.
