The Bono Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has dispatched military and police reinforcements to Sampa in the Jaman North District following a violent outbreak of the town’s long-standing chieftaincy dispute, which left one person dead and a police officer critically injured.
According to District Chief Executive (DCE) Mr George Adane, the confrontation, which began around 1:00 pm on Wednesday, escalated when rival factions exchanged gunfire. The injured officer is receiving treatment at the Sampa Government Hospital, while the deceased’s body has been preserved for autopsy.
The violence, linked to disagreements over the gazetting of Nana Samgba Gyafla, also resulted in widespread destruction. Three residential houses and parts of the Sampa Market were set ablaze, forcing many residents to remain indoors in fear.
Mr Adane confirmed that the REGSEC acted swiftly to restore calm, stressing that security personnel were still patrolling the township to prevent further escalation.
The Sampa chieftaincy conflict has simmered for years, but Wednesday’s eruption marks one of the bloodiest episodes yet. Authorities are calling for restraint as investigations continue into the causes and perpetrators of the clashes.
