Businessman Seidu Agongo has called on the Ghanaian government to adopt intentional and inclusive policies to empower local entrepreneurs and drive economic growth. In an interview with Metro TV, Agongo emphasized the need for government support that goes beyond personal and political connections, stressing that a strategic and focused approach is key to fostering national development.
Agongo stated, “Success is a deliberate effort. The government must be intentional in empowering individuals who may not be family members or close associates, but who have the potential to contribute meaningfully to the economy.” He likened the systematic empowerment required to the strategic planning seen during colonial times, urging the government to implement policies that actively promote local businesses and counter external economic influences.
Agriculture, Agongo argued, plays a crucial role in economic stability and security. He highlighted the dangers of a nation where citizens allocate a significant portion of their income to food expenses, warning that such a situation creates conditions for social instability. “Hunger drives crime, and much of what we see in terms of theft—whether it’s cassava or livestock—stems from the need to survive,” he noted.
The businessman proposed utilizing the country’s untapped agricultural potential by directing the energy of young, unemployed Ghanaians into the sector, ensuring it is recognized as a respectable and viable career choice for professionals from all fields. He pointed out that most of Ghana’s land remains underutilized and stressed the importance of building a self-reliant system that does not depend on external forces.
Agongo also voiced concerns about the growing presence of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the country’s food supply, warning that such external control over food production could further entrench Ghana’s economic dependency and compromise the nation’s sovereignty.
In conclusion, Agongo urged the government to take bold steps in empowering local businesspeople and investing strategically in agriculture to safeguard the nation’s future economic independence.
