A relentless rainstorm pummeled the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis on Thursday, unleashing more than six hours of intense downpour that left residents grappling with widespread flooding and electricity blackouts.
Key areas such as Adiembra, Sekondi, and the Central Business District (CBD) bore the brunt of the storm, with floodwaters inundating homes, damaging property, and forcing some residents to evacuate. The unexpected scale of the flooding severely disrupted everyday life, rendering major roads and thoroughfares impassable and halting commercial activities.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) confirmed that the storm triggered faults within its distribution network, resulting in power outages across multiple communities in the Western Region. While repair crews have been deployed promptly, the timeline for full restoration remains uncertain, leaving many households and businesses in the dark.
Public health concerns also mounted as officials cautioned residents against contact with floodwaters, warning that stagnant water may carry harmful contaminants. Local authorities were urged by affected community members to swiftly implement flood mitigation measures and provide emergency relief to those displaced or severely impacted by the deluge.
Adding to the urgency, the Ghana Meteorological Agency has forecasted continued rainfall in the coming days, heightening fears of further flooding. The agency has called on residents to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions to safeguard lives and property.
This latest weather event underscores the pressing need for enhanced urban drainage infrastructure and disaster preparedness in the Sekondi-Takoradi area, as climate-related extreme weather incidents increase in frequency and intensity.
