Dancehall artiste Shatta Wale has launched a fresh criticism of former Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mark Okraku-Mantey, questioning his impact on Ghana’s creative arts sector during his time in government.
The musician argued that despite Okraku-Mantey’s extensive background in the entertainment industry, his tenure in public office failed to deliver meaningful benefits for artists and other stakeholders within the sector.
Speaking in an interview shared on TikTok, Shatta Wale claimed that expectations were high when Okraku-Mantey assumed office because of his long-standing involvement in music and entertainment. However, he contended that those expectations were not met.
“Can you see that he didn’t do anything while in office? He didn’t even benefit from his own position,” Shatta Wale said.
The award-winning artiste further questioned the former deputy minister’s understanding of the industry’s needs, despite his years of experience as a music producer, manager and entertainment executive.
“As far as the industry is concerned, he is the only person who is not intelligent,” he added.
The comments are the latest chapter in a long-running public disagreement between the two figures, who have often differed on issues relating to the direction, management and development of Ghana’s entertainment industry.
Shatta Wale has on several occasions criticised policymakers and industry leaders over what he describes as inadequate support for creative professionals, while Okraku-Mantey has consistently defended government efforts to strengthen the sector through policy reforms and stakeholder engagement.
The latest remarks have reignited debate among industry players and fans, with discussions centring on the legacy of Okraku-Mantey’s tenure and the broader challenges facing Ghana’s creative arts and entertainment sector.
While Okraku-Mantey has not publicly responded to the latest comments, the exchange highlights continuing concerns within the industry over leadership, policy implementation and opportunities for artists and creative entrepreneurs.
