Residents of the South Tongu District in the Volta Region are preparing to take to the streets on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, in protest against what they describe as a prolonged and worsening shortage of potable water in the area.
The group, known as the Concerned Citizens of South Tongu District, has formally notified security authorities of the planned demonstration, which is expected to involve more than 1,000 participants.
In accordance with Section 1 of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491), organisers submitted a notice dated May 26 to the District Police Commander outlining their intention to embark on the protest.
According to the convenor, Mawuli Sappor, the demonstration is a response to what they describe as an acute water crisis affecting households, schools, businesses, and healthcare delivery across the district.
He said the march will begin at 0700 hours from the Top Oil Filling Station (UniPetrol) and proceed through designated routes, ending at the South Tongu District Assembly, where a petition will be presented to the District Chief Executive.
The organisers indicated that copies of the notice have also been shared with key stakeholders, including security authorities, the District Assembly, and the local Member of Parliament, as part of efforts to ensure transparency and coordination.
Mr. Sappor noted that the group remains committed to ensuring the demonstration is peaceful and fully compliant with the law, while urging security agencies to provide adequate protection throughout the exercise.
Residents have raised concerns that prolonged water shortages have forced some communities to rely on unsafe alternative sources, increasing fears of public health risks and deepening hardship, particularly among children and vulnerable households.
Organisers say the protest reflects growing frustration over what they describe as delays in addressing the district’s water infrastructure challenges and hope it will prompt urgent intervention from the Ghana Water Company Limited and other authorities.
As the planned date approaches, stakeholders and security agencies are expected to maintain heightened attention to ensure the exercise proceeds without incident.
