Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has raised serious concerns over the security of lawmakers and parliamentary staff, citing a rise in attacks by unidentified individuals within the parliamentary enclave.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Parliamentary Service Board for the Ninth Parliament, Bagbin urged the Majority Leader to prioritize efforts to strengthen security measures in and around the legislative precinct.
“One of the challenges that need urgent attention is securing the parliamentary enclave to ensure the safety of members and staff. This has been a worrying matter for some time now, and we are actually insecure here,” he stated.
Bagbin disclosed that there have been instances where intruders gained access to Parliament’s premises and physically attacked members and staff. He noted that these attackers often evade capture by scaling the perimeter walls and disappearing into the surrounding forested areas.
“We are not safe. Sometimes people come in and attack us or staff, and when there is an attempt to apprehend them, they escape over the wall into the forest. This is a serious issue that must be resolved to ensure Parliament functions effectively,” he emphasized.
The Speaker called on parliamentary leadership to take immediate steps to address the issue, stressing that improved security measures are essential for the smooth operation of the legislative body.
His remarks have reignited discussions on security within Ghana’s parliamentary precinct, with many calling for urgent action to prevent further breaches and ensure the safety of legislators and staff. The Parliamentary Service Board is expected to deliberate on new strategies to enhance security, including increased surveillance, reinforced perimeter controls, and stricter access protocols.
