Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has publicly apologized to Klottey Korle MP, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, and her family following a derogatory remark made against her in the House. The Speaker also extended his apology to the chiefs and people of the Anlo State, acknowledging the distress caused by the incident.
The controversy erupted during a parliamentary session on February 4, 2025, when an unidentified MP shouted, “Daughter of a murderer, sit down!” at Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings during a heated debate marking the 60th anniversary of Joseph Boakye Danquah’s death. The comment, directed at the daughter of Ghana’s late former President, Jerry John Rawlings, sparked widespread condemnation.
Addressing the matter on March 4, Speaker Bagbin expressed regret over the incident, describing it as an unfortunate moment in parliamentary proceedings.
“In light of this incident, I extend my deepest apologies to Hon. Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Her Excellency Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings, the family, the chiefs, and all the good people of Anlo land,” he stated. “It is a sad situation when one serving their country must endure such indignity.”
Beyond the apology, the Speaker announced that a formal investigation has been launched to identify the MP responsible for the remark. He warned that if the culprit fails to come forward, they will face more severe consequences when identified.
The move signals Parliament’s commitment to upholding decorum and accountability within its ranks, as political observers await further developments in the probe.
