Sewerage Systems Ghana Limited (SSGL), a subsidiary of the Jospong Group, has highlighted the critical role of proper waste disposal practices in ensuring effective wastewater treatment and public health safety.
During an industrial visit to the Lavender Hill Fecal Treatment Plant in Accra, Mrs. Lola Asiseh Ashitey, General Manager of SSGL, called on Ghanaians to adopt responsible waste management habits to prevent disruptions in the treatment process.
“When people dispose of solid waste in public toilets or mix it with liquid waste, it creates major challenges for our treatment plants. If we manage our waste properly, we all benefit from a cleaner and healthier environment,” she stressed.
SSGL currently operates six wastewater treatment plants across Ghana and aims to expand its services to all 16 regions. However, Mrs. Ashitey noted that financial constraints and the improper disposal of waste continue to hinder efficiency.
She also urged the government to provide consistent financial support to enable the company to maintain and expand its operations.
“Since starting operations in 2017, we have played a key role in eliminating cholera in the Greater Accra Region. With the right support, we can replicate this success nationwide and safeguard public health,” she stated.
Proper fecal waste management is essential in preventing diseases such as cholera and dysentery, and SSGL is committed to ensuring Ghana’s wastewater treatment systems remain efficient and sustainable.
As SSGL works towards nationwide expansion, public cooperation in responsible waste disposal and government backing will be crucial in achieving long-term environmental and health benefits.
