The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has approved a 10 per cent increase in pension payments for 2026, with lower-income retirees set to enjoy the largest gains under the new structure.
Under the adjustment, all pensioners will receive a 6 per cent fixed increase, while an additional portion of 4 per cent will be redistributed to provide higher effective increases for those at the lower end of the pension scale. Pensioners currently receiving the minimum monthly pension of GH¢300 will see their payments rise to GH¢409.56, representing a 36.52 per cent boost—well above the standard indexation rate.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, SSNIT Chief Actuary Evelyn Adjei explained that the minimum pension for new retirees will also increase from GH¢300 to GH¢400, reinforcing the pension floor. She noted that the 2026 indexation considered factors such as salary growth among active contributors, projected inflation of 8 ± 2 per cent for 2025, and the long-term sustainability of the pension fund. While higher-income pensioners will see increases closer to the 10 per cent standard, the redistribution mechanism ensures that those with smaller pensions benefit proportionally more.
