The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has clarified that members cannot name casual partners or friends as beneficiaries of their pensions, emphasizing that only blood relatives are eligible for nomination.
Mr. Frank Molbila, SSNIT’s General Manager in charge of Benefits, made the statement on Monday at a regional forum in Sunyani, organised jointly with the Trades Union Congress (TUC) under the theme: “Empowering Unions, Secure Futures: Deepening Pension Literacy Across Ghana.” The forum aimed to improve understanding of pension benefits and strengthen collaboration between SSNIT and organised labour.
Highlighting the long-term value of the scheme, Mr. Molbila said, “With the SSNIT pension, the longer you live, the longer you benefit.” He encouraged all workers to register and actively participate in the scheme, noting that it remains a critical pillar of financial security for retirement.
According to the Trust, a total of GHC6.77 billion in pension benefits was paid in 2025, with projections of about GHC8.21 billion expected to be disbursed by the end of 2026. The oldest beneficiary currently receiving payments is 107 years old, demonstrating the longevity of the scheme. Pension amounts range widely, with the highest at GHC213,000 per month and the lowest at around GHC400.
Mr. Molbila also provided an update on SSNIT’s invalidity pensions, which support members permanently unable to work due to physical or mental disability. The oldest invalidity pensioner is 86 years old, with the highest monthly payment standing at GHC19,923. In 2025, GHC40.8 million was paid in invalidity pensions, and the program has been active for 32 years.
The SSNIT official urged members to regularly update their records, particularly their beneficiary information, to ensure accurate and timely disbursement of benefits.
By reinforcing the legal framework for pension nominations and promoting retirement planning, SSNIT aims to safeguard workers’ long-term financial security and the well-being of their families.
